Great Yorkshire Show 2025

Gloriously sunny skies set the scene for an exceptional day at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show. Under picture-perfect conditions, the Highland Cattle classes drew a strong crowd and spirited competition. Judge David Soutar presided over an impressive line-up, spotlighting excellence in breeding and presentation.

Overall champion, Bonnie Melody of Moorside

Overall and female champion, Bonnie Melody of Moorside

Robert and Dianne Bradley’s homebred Bonnie Melody of Moorside, handled by Rhianydd Davies, was tapped out as Breed Champion reaffirming the consistent quality of the Moorside fold.

Standing in reserve was Kirsty 8th of Gartocharn, owned by Milly Bradley and bred by Jim and Catherine McKechnie, her presence and performance impressed throughout the show.

Junior Champion Bonnie Matilda of Moorside, owned, bred and exhibited by Robert and Dianne Bradley is a standout young heifer showing promise and presence, securing top honours for the Bradleys.

Reserve Junior Champion Sadie Dubh of Eolhc-Lash, owned, bred and exhibited by Chloe Roberts, is a fine example of youthful quality and structure.

Male Champion was given to Eoin Mhor 30th of Mottistone, owned by David and Nancy Booth, handled by James Booth and bred my Michael Poland. He is a powerful and balanced bull, commanding attention in the ring.

While Reserve Male Champion went to Brogach Ruadh Murphy of Seam, owned and exhibited by Cannon Hall Farm Ltd and bred by Simon and Emma Haley. He was well-presented with a strong Highland character.

The Highland section provided both spectacle and substance, with breed enthusiasts celebrating a strong showing of traditional traits and forward-thinking breeding. Congratulations to all exhibitors for their passion and commitment.

Judge David Soutar commented, “It was quite poignant for me to be asked to judge the GYS and, in particular, place the Supreme Champion - The Mansfield Trophy. I started my working life 60 years ago working for the Earl of Mansfield who donated the trophy. The Scone Palace fold were no strangers to success at the GYS winning the championship multiple times.

Judges’ report

I must say despite there being no Celtic entries the general quality was first class, especially among the females! The majority of animals were well brought out. In particular, the two young ladies: Rhianydd Davies, who ended up Champion and reserve, Milly Bradley deserve great credit for the way they professionally presented their charges to me.

My Supreme Champion, the 2-year-old Bonny Melody of Moorside, had a slight edge over reserve Kirsty 8th of Gartocharn, an in-calf 3-year-old who if anything was in too big condition for me. Not a lot between them and there was no doubt they stood out.

The cow classes although not big were full of good cows, some better walking than others and both the senior and junior cows were animals I would be happy to have at home.

The large yearling heifer class, I kept as one and here maybe legs were more of an issue but all in all a decent show and all credit for entering.

Thanks for a great few days, Yorkshire. Anne and I along with Dougie and Sheila had a great time!
