Lizzie Francis and Roddy McDougall with the Tom Thomson Memorial Quaich

On Monday afternoon at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow, our friend and Chairman of the West of Scotland Highland Cattle Club, Roddy McDougall sadly passed away. After two and a half years of contending with his illness, Roddy slipped away peacefully with Linda, Heather and Scott by his side.

A family man through and through, Roddy will be sorely missed by Linda and all the family. He was never happier than when he had his grandchildren and family around him.

Roddy was a good friend to everyone who knew him, he was always there with help when needed, generous to a fault with his time, advice and practical support. We will all have our favourite memories of Roddy, be sure to keep them to the forefront of our thoughts. If there was a gathering Roddy would be at the heart of it, ready with a joke and an anecdote. His circle of friends and acquaintances was huge, and you could never go anywhere with Roddy without him having a story to tell, either about the place or someone related to it.

It is fair to say he had a ‘mild’ interest in Highland Cattle. Goodness only knows the number of Highland Cattle shows and events Roddy attended over the years. Always good company and a great judge of cattle, he frequently joked that perhaps with his butcher’s eye, he maybe saw animals slightly differently from the judge in the show ring. When asked about his favourite colour of Highlander he always said, “They all look the same with their jackets off.”

A huge supporter of the West of Scotland Highland Cattle Club over the years, Roddy has been the inspiration behind many of the events and trips the Club has held. He kept everyone on their toes and had an endless stream of suggestions and the drive to make things happen. Most importantly, he had a knack of bringing people on board and getting them involved. An integral part of the Club’s committee and latterly the Chairman, everyone will miss him enormously and will be forever grateful for him keeping things right, so many times his advice has served the Club well.

All of us are united in sending our condolences and best wishes to Linda and all of Roddy’s family, please keep them in your thoughts.

Roddy’s funeral will be held at the Hurlet Crematorium, Glasgow on Friday 12 May at 2pm.
